Inside the Game with Jerry Griffin: A Glimpse into Golf, Culture, and Innovation
In our latest issue, we sat down with Police Chief Jerry Griffin of Country Club Hills, Missouri, we dive into some of the most pressing issues facing both law enforcement and the communities they serve. With over 38 years of experience in policing, including time spent with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and now as the Chief of Police in a small, predominantly Black city, Chief Griffin offers a unique perspective on policing, race, and community relationships.
From strategies for cultivating local talent to his perspective on creating inclusive spaces in the sport, Griffin’s approach is as dynamic as it is inspiring.

“Golf is more than a game,” Griffin shared. “It’s about creating opportunities, building relationships, and shaping the next generation of leaders.”
Policing and Public Perception
When asked about the general perception of the police, particularly within Black communities, Griffin offers a candid viewpoint. "No, the police are not out to get us," he asserts. "But sometimes, young people perceive us as the enemy because we’re enforcing laws they don’t want to follow. The police aren’t the problem; it’s a broader societal issue." Griffin acknowledges that there is a cycle of mistrust, one that is deeply rooted in the history of policing in America. "People in underserved communities don’t see police as protectors—they see us as enforcers of a system that’s failed them." He also touches on the systemic issues that drive criminal behavior, such as poverty, lack of education, and a fractured family structure. "It’s a cycle that begins long before someone steps into the streets and ends up in trouble with the law," Griffin says.
